Yatai are portable street food stalls that are set up in the evenings in Fukuoka's city center. Serving up fresh local dishes, beer and local shochu spirits, these stalls are a feature of the nightlife around Hakata, Nagahama, Nakasu, and Watanabe Street. Each food stall has a few seats, where you sit almost elbow-to-elbow with your fellow diners, creating a convivial atmosphere. Chatting with your neighbors and the jovial stall owners is part of the charm. Amongst the many food options are staples like Fukuoka's famous pork-based Hakata ramen, oden, tempura, and dishes made with mentaiko—spicy cod roe.
