Kokura Castle
小倉城
This castle in Kitakyushu is bound by Katsuyama Park and the Murasaki River. The castle was the home of the Ogasawara family, who ruled the area from 1632, but it was destroyed by fire in 1866, then rebuilt in 1959. Katsuyama Park is a popular place for seeing cherry blossoms from late March to early April. Paper lanterns are strung in the 300 cherry trees, creating a beautiful setting for night time viewing against the background of the castle. On the other side of the castle, River Walk is a major shopping centre, where you can pick up snacks and picnic supplies to enjoy in the park.
