The Natural Power of Hot Springs
Oita, on Kyushu's east coast, is famous for its hot spring towns, notably Beppu and Yufuin, but it also has several charming castle towns, including Kitsuki and Taketa, where history is brought to life through festivals and events. The mountainous inland has hiking and cycling trails and is dotted with relaxing hot springs, for the perfect outdoor adventure.
Oita is close to the islands of Honshu and Shikoku, allowing for easy connections. You can fly from Tokyo in less than 2 hours and from Osaka in 1 hour. There are express trains from Kokura in Fukuoka, connecting to the shinkansen from Osaka.
Within Japan, there are daily direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya to Oita. There are also international flights to and from various cities in Korea. Airport Express Airliner buses offer an easy transfer from the airport to popular destinations, including Oita city, Beppu and Kitsuki. If you're planning to explore the region by car, there are rental car desks at the airport.
Buses and trains connect Oita city with key destinations including Beppu and Yufuin. Oita city is covered by JR Kyushu trains and multiple buses. Special sightseeing buses can take you to popular areas like Kunisaki and Yabakei.
JR Kyushu trains offer quick connections around Oita and between prefectures. There are a number of special express trains that take passengers to popular spots in style. The Yufuin no Mori takes you from the hot spring resorts of Beppu to Yufuin and on to Hakata. Comfortable seating and panoramic windows make the Sonic a popular choice to speed between Fukuoka and Oita. The distinctive red Kyushu Odan Tokkyo takes the scenic route from Beppu to Aso in Kumamoto.
Travel around Oita by bus is fairly easy, using Bus Navi Oita to plan your trip. There are special bus tour services to the main sights in Kunisaki and Yabakei, leaving from Oita, Beppu and Nakatsu.
