Maizuru park/Fukuoka Castle ruins
舞鶴公園・福岡城址
Maizuru Park, located only a short 20-minute walk from Ohori Koen Subway Station in Fukuoka City, was built around the ruins of Fukuoka Castle. The castle was the former base of an influential political leader until the Meiji Era and was later occupied by the American army during World War II, making this a crucial spot in Japanese history. Fukuoka Castle's most notable feature is its wide stone walls. The best time to visit the park is during the spring when a thousand cherry trees are in full bloom. It is a popular spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties but it is also a great place to go for a city walk year-round. Maizuru Park today houses several sports facilities, a courthouse, and an art museum.
