Yoron Castle Ruins

与論城跡

The original Yoron Castle was built in the 15th century for the son of the then king of the Ryukyu (Okinawa) Kingdom. During construction, the dynasty that ruled at the time was defeated, so the castle itself was not completed. Consequently the site has no castle buildings, only a small stone wall made with coral. It is said that this stone wall was made to resemble the shape of a reclining dragon lying on the ground to protect the island.

Inside the castle, you will find Jishu Shrine, where the primitive gods of Yoron are worshipped, and Kotohira Shrine, where the seasonal "Yoron 15 Night Dance" is performed under the light of the full moon.
