Kamo no Okusu Camphor Tree

This magnificent tree, called Kamou no Oksu, is believed to be the largest camphor tree in Japan. It stands around 30 meters tall, and its trunk is 24.2 meters around, spreading out to 40 meters at its base. You can find it in the grounds of Kamo Hachiman Shrine in Aira, less than an hour north of Kagoshima's city center. The tree is estimated to be around 1,500 years old. An elevated walkway has been built around the tree to protect its extensive roots, and a small door has been fitted to protect the partially hollow interior, lending it a fairytale appearance. The tree has previously suffered damage during fierce typhoons, but the efforts of local people have ensured that it is remains a much-loved, living monument.
