Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art
田中一村記念美術館
Tanaka Isson, Amami Oshima's most famous artist, settled on the island in 1958 at the age of 50. By then, Tanaka Isson had experimented with various painting styles in Tokyo and Chiba, had traveled extensively around Japan, and had refined his exacting sketching techniques.
After arriving in Amami Oshima, he decided to spend the rest of his life there dedicated to capturing the native flora and fauna of the substropical island in near scientific detail. Since 2001, the Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art has been exhibiting and conserving all his works, from his earliest sketches around Tokyo to his final masterpieces directly inspired by the nature of Amami Oshima.
