Kumamoto Castle is a symbol of Kumamoto, with a striking black facade and a commanding view over the city. It was constructed in the early 1600s, and has an eventful history, having changed hands and suffered damage and subsequent reconstruction over the ages.
More recently, it was badly damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Some parts of the castle grounds are now open to the public and you can take a reconstruction walking tour route that forms a loop past points of interest in varying states of repair. Along the way you can compare the ongoing reconstruction with photos taken before the earthquake.
