Daikanbo Peak
大観峰
Daikanbo, which means large observatory, is named for its panoramic views of the five central peaks of Mt. Aso, and Oita’s Kuju Mountain range. This grand view is known as the Nehan-zo, or Nirvana Buddha, referencing the image of Buddha in repose. This view is best in November, when the Buddha appears to lie on a sea of clouds, created by a large variation in daytime temperatures. At 936 meters high, Daikanbo is the highest peak of Mt. Aso’s northern outer rim, and the lookout offers a stunning view of the towns and fields of Aso Valley below. The observatory has a gift shop and restaurant.
