Amakusa, Sakitsu Village

天草の崎津集落

The Amakusa Islands in western Kumamoto Prefecture is an area with deep historical ties to the Christian faith and culture, with many places where the faith from centuries ago can still be observed. Sakitsu village has attracted increased attention since it was registered as one of the components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Nagasaki and Amakusa Region Related to the Hidden Christians" in 2018. The stately gothic-style Sakitsu Church built in 1934 has tatami flooring, a rarity even in Japan, and gentle sunlight shines through the bright stained glass windows. Standing by Yokaku Bay, it is also known as the "Church of the Sea."
