Hamanoura Tanada
浜野浦の棚田
Terraced rice fields are not unusual in Kyushu, given the island's mountainous terrain and generous rainfall. The Hamanoura Tanada (tanada means rice terraces), are set into steep hills overlooking the Genkai Sea. Their many layers give the appearance of stairs leading straight from the ocean. From the middle of April they are filled with water and the planting of the rice itself is finished in early May. During this period, the sun setting on the horizon turns the sea and the mirrored surface of the rice paddies a blazing orange.
