Tokunoshima Island

徳之島

Tokunoshima, located around 400km from mainland Kyushu and Kagoshima Prefecture, is part of the Amami Island archipelago. Blessed with a mild climate and abundant sugarcane cultivation, the island is called a “treasure trove of living organisms” with many rare species unique to Tokunoshima. The island was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in July 2021, along with Amami Oshima Island, northern Okinawa, and Iriomote Island, in recognition of its diversity of flora and fauna. In addition, visitors can watch Tokushima’s popular bullfighting tournament, an exciting event for the whole island. Visitors to Tokunoshima can enjoy the island’s unique culture and nature to the fullest.
