Glover Garden

グラバー園

The former mansion of the Glover family and a number of other residences dating back to the days of the Nagasaki foreign settlement (1862-1899), are known as Glover Garden. Thomas Glover, a Scottish merchant, built the residence in 1863. Sitting atop Minami-Yamate hill, the site has views over Nagasaki Harbor. As you explore the colorful gardens, cobbled walkways, and historic buildings, look out for statues of the composer Giacomo Puccini and Tamaki Miura, the Japanese opera singer who famously performed the role of Cio-Cio-San in Madame Butterfly, which is set in Nagasaki.
