Amagase Onsen, a collection of hot spring baths tucked into the mountains a short ride from Hita City, joins Beppu and Yufuin to form the trifecta of top onsen destinations in the Bungo region. Most of the baths offer mixed bathing (ie, not segregated by gender) and you’ll also find tattoo-friendly onsen and those with private baths as well. Consider staying in a traditional ryokan inn with atmospheric river and waterfall views.
