Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center

別府市竹細工伝統産業会館

Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center was opened to celebrate and commemorate a traditional craft that is said to have existed for almost 2,000 years. At the center, visitors can see everything from traditional woven bamboo artworks and tools to contemporary interior items and furniture. There are also workshops — reservations at least a week in advance required — for those who want to try their hand at making their own Beppu bamboo crafts. Younger visitors can learn how to make a charming bamboo bell accessory, while older (ages 13 and up) and weave a small basket called shikainami.
